From the history of Russian embroider in gold

Gold-thread embroidery has been known in Russia since the pre-Christian era. However, it was not until the Baptism of Russia that this craft reached its heyday in the wake of Byzantine culture. Skillful Russian embroiderers would turn fabrics into genuine masterpieces. Precious gold-embroidered relics that have survived from the days of Old Russia are striking for the elegance of their ornamental motifs and immaculate execution.
Between the fourteenth and the seventeenth centuries gold-thread embroidery in Muscovy found its way into a costume. The Tsars’ and courtiers’ clothes, as well as ecclesiastic attire, glittered and shimmered with gold thread stitched onto a polychrome background of fine silk and soft velvet spangled with shining, sparkling gemstones and glowing pearls. The patterns favoured plant ornaments of fanciful sprays topped with sumptuous imaginary blossoms and foliage. In Muscovy nunneries and practically all houses of the rich and noble had workshops where embroidery in gold was purely female occupation. It was not until gilded thread, a cheaper kind of thread, became common in Muscovy that embroidery in gold began to develop apace involving folk clothes, as well. Girls’ headbands, pointed kokoshniks, skullcaps, jackets with blister seams, and silk and muslin kerchiefs were embroidered in gold thread, nacre, small river pearls and imitation gemstones. Folk costume extended the range of this kind of embroidery with the shimmering brocade of a sarafan sleeveless dress. Today, the towns of Gorodets and Torzhok are still renowned for their tradition of embroidery in gold.
