Woodcarving
Wood-carved bookmarks were designed after an old type of slit bookmark. All of our bookmarks have a stem with a slit for fastening on to a page, with the carved edges protruding.
On woodcarving
Timber has always been revered in Russia. Since ancient times it has been anthropomorphized and worshipped. It was used for
building towns and citadels, small churches, grand cathedrals, and peasant houses. It was woodcarving that turned timber structures into works of art. The motifs included flowers, crop plants, animals, and birds. Particularly prominent was the cockerel, a herald of the sunrise. Having fixed up their izba houses and harvested the crops, peasants got down to the winter craft of woodcarving. Wood came alive in the hands of a skilful master craftsman turning it into beautiful household implements. Russian wood-carvers renowned for their inexhaustible fantasy, thorough knowledge of the material and artistic taste, which made it possible for them to create genuine masterpieces ranging from a majestic cathedral to a wooden toy.
