From the history of hand weaving
A distaff and loom are the symbols of the Russian village community. All peasant clothes and household fabrics were homespun
. During long winter evenings women would be spinning thread from flax and hemp harvested in summer and wielding their looms. The merits of a marriageable girl were judged by the beauty of designs woven by her. Elaborate age-old designs were in two colours: white and red. They included ornaments of stylized human figures and plants, geometrical patterns and Slavonic symbols. It was not until later that other colours were introduced, e.g. golden, green, yellow and black. Each region of Russia had its own traditions in patterned weaving; however in all of them there was always an extraordinary harmony and peaceful balance.
